Yes, that will happen if you run polygon reduction on a character like this - do not do this, as it will give you topology that is entirely unsuitable for a character in a game. It will also break any phong shading or normal tag that came with your character. The correct way to do this would be to retopologize it. Unfortunately R13 doesn't really have the tools you need to do that. Fortunately a 3D mannequin like that is actually a primitive object in C4D (figure object from primitives drop-down), so I have to ask myself why you would ever download a separate model, when the program comes with one, and it's got decent low poly topology suitable for animation right out of the box!
